UntitledATG’s West End Creative Learning team launch a new form of Work Experience in the West End

In April 2014, George Bach, a third year student from RADA’s Postgraduate Diploma in Stage Electrics and Lighting Design, joined the team at our Donmar Warehouse for a week of Technical Work Experience.

The scheme was so successful that it will now be rolled out across ATG’s West End theatres and, where opportunities arise, Drama Schools and Universities with courses akin to the one at RADA will be invites to recommend students from their courses to apply for the chance to work in the West End.

George said “my time at the Donmar proved a very useful learning opportunity as it gave me my first real insight into what it takes to work in lighting in a professional west end venue”.

David Griffiths, Theatre Manager, Donmar Warehouse, said “We are so excited that the Donmar are able to provide this opportunity for third year students specialising in technical theatre, giving them first hand experience of a producing theatre turnaround to aid them in seeking employment upon leaving college, but also hopefully creating a potential workforce for the future of our theatre.”

George Dives, Chief Electrician, Donmar Warehouse, said: “It was a great help to have George on board during the pre-production and production tech period.  He took to it like a duck to water and fitted in with the technical departments immediately. It was really rewarding to give someone this opportunity and practical experience as this is how I got my foot in the door at the start of my career as a theatre technician.  George’s enthusiasm and skill impressed me so much that consequently we are using him as one of our casual technicians.”

Ellen Bott, ATG’s West End Creative Learning Manager, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the scheme is to be rolled out across the West End. It provides a great opportunity for those in training to gain hands on experience in one of our West End theatres and also enables out own technical teams and staff to share their skills and experience with those who may shortly be joining them in out venues and tap into new talent coming into the industry.
