Hackney in the West End
West End Creative Learning were recently fortunate enough to receive funding through the ATG Foundation to create an exciting opportunity for 16 young people from Hackney, asking them:

If you had a say, how would you run your school? Hackney? London? The United Kingdom?

ATG’s West End Creative Learning team ran a three-week intensive course exploring England’s role on the world stage – just after the General Election, 70 years after the end of World War Two, 600 years after the Battle of Agincourt. The work culminated in a performance of a devised theatre piece at the Piccadilly Theatre, taking Shakespeare’s state-of-the-nation play Henry V as a starting point.

The participants worked with a range of theatre practitioners, gained creative industry insights and had the unique opportunity to perform live on a West End stage in front of industry professionals and their family and friends.

Please watch our short video to see just some of the results of the amazing work of the young performers from Hackney and the practitioners supporting this initiative.

Working with professional theatre people was amazing, it taught me to behave in a more professional way and be more disciplined. It has boosted my confidence and made me aware of how I have to behave.” Participant My Ends, My Rules 2015

Hackney

This experience is way better than I thought it would be, it’s better because I didn’t know it was going to be so creative. Usually I am just in the box but this has allowed me to be more outside of the box.” Participant My Ends, My Rules 2015

The best thing about the last three weeks was getting to meet new people and get involved with the creation and devising. My favourite moment was getting to perform, all our hard work had finally paid off and there was a huge sigh of relief. Working with professional theatre makers made me feel really special to get given this opportunity. I appreciate everything. I would definitely do this project again. The people were all amazing and I would love to do it again.” Participant My Ends, My Rules 2015

Lord of the Dance at the Playhouse Theatre

In the Winter of 2015, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance came to the Playhouse Theatre, London and ATG West End Creative Learning brought an outreach scheme of free tickets for schools including a pre-show Dance workshop with Dancers from the show.

This allowed students who may not normally have easy access to theatre, to be able to see a highly acclaimed show and learn a Dance from it as well.
