Milton Keynes Theatre has a proactive Creative Learning Department who create a huge number of opportunities for young people, families, adults and schools to engage with the theatre and performing arts throughout the year. Whether you are a parent of a toddler, a young person interested in performing or an adult wanting to return to dance we have something for everyone.
We run a full and varied programme of activity including show related workshops and backstage tours around our visiting productions. We offer theatrical workshops covering everything and anything from theatrical make-up to puppetry for both young people and adults. Family workshops take place around our children’s ballets, children’s shows and pantomimes. We run school holiday courses and projects including Stage Experience, our annual summer youth performance project which culminates in performances of a musical theatre production on our stage. In addition to all of this activity we also offer special one off events such as ‘Behind the Scenes days’ for adults and schools.
Alongside our workshops and courses we also run a programme of weekly theatre classes for both young people and adults that take place in the theatre’s backstage dance studio during term time. Classes include a resident youth theatre, ballet, street dance, musical theatre, and tap dance for children and for adults we have ballet, tap and dance fit classes. We also hold monthly adult acting master-classes covering a different acting theme each month, enabling people to come to whichever session they fancy having a go at, no prior experience is necessary.
We organise pre-show talks and post-show Q&A’s around our productions wherever possible, look out for these in our theatre brochures.
For schools we offer a creative programme of workshops and projects aimed at educating and inspiring young people in theatre. For both primary, secondary or college/university level students we offer show-related workshops (including page to stage workshops) around all of our visiting productions which feature on the curriculum but many other shows too. Workshops can take place at the theatre or we can also arrange to send our experienced practitioners out to your school or setting. We also deliver backstage tours for school/college groups, usually on weekday mornings. Additionally for performing arts students from GCSE level and above we can arrange to deliver career days where students meet with staff at the theatre, learn about careers in theatre and appropriate entry routes. We can also help to deliver special projects for groups of students to gain their arts award discover, explore, bronze and silver levels.
